What Have I Learned?

January 10, 2019 | By More

As the new year begins, I am reflecting on the numerous decades behind me. I can easily travel in time and see years of yearning for a deep spiritual and authentic perspective. Throughout, I explored meditation, studied ancient texts, had conversations with friends, and discovered life (the good and the less good) and myself in the process.  At a very young age, perhaps as early as eight years old, I asked questions such as: What is life? Who am I? Do I have a soul? Where do we go when we die?

This introspective nature took me to India, in the Himalayas, where I lived for 15 years. During this time, I studied philosophy and profound Sanskrit texts dating back to 4000 years. I learned about the complexity of our human nature. What amazed me is how this ancient philosophy was still applicable today! Since time immemorial people have always dealt with pain, sorrow, fear, and illusions. Those ancient texts recommended a practice that spoke to me deeply: Don’t just talk; sit down, and focus your mind to go beyond its superficial and conditioned tendencies. Essentially, the contemplative practices I learned were not religious in nature, they were based on an introspective philosophy that was meant to lead us to transform the illusions we carried into clarity. I understood that the answers were hidden behind the maze of my mind. I also saw that I needed to heal my own wounds, the hurt and misunderstandings that were still very much a part of my life. Now I understand that we all carry a certain degree of hurt. Unless we heal those wounds, they stay with us for the entirety of our lives and constantly hold us back.

I believe that evolution has no end, that we continue to learn and grow, and that our potential is immense. I remember a traditional story of a beggar sitting on a box. A person walked by and said: “Have you looked inside the box that you are sitting on?” Curious, the beggar opened the box and found immeasurable wealth. This symbolizes each and everyone’s potential.

It is through trials and tribulations, learning from friends and teachers, that I am opening windows wider than ever before. The most satisfactory life is one of service, of love for humanity, of forgiveness, and of offering a clear and non-judgmental presence. This leads to an integration of all great spiritual principles: In truth we are one life, we are all brothers and sisters. We all do our best and we’re all learning, evolving, even if this is not obvious at times.

As one of my teachers, Dr. Brian Weiss, repeatedly said during his training: “Love is the most important thing in the world. Nothing surpasses it.” I understand this more than ever. So, in this new year, may love and compassion prevail, for it is good for us, and good for all. Though this may be enticing, at times it isn’t so easy.
