The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

An ancient philosophy on a new perspective on life and on ourselves

When I first read The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali over 40 years ago I felt that I had come home. I loved the clarity and depth, united with a pragmatic approach that still resonated thousands of years later. I lived in India for 15 years, studying and earning a PhD in eastern philosophy, focussing primarily on The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. I learned to read and write in Sanskrit and taught weekly classes in my little home perched in the Himalayas to a variety of westerners coming to India to have direct access to its wealth of wisdom. We had in-depth conversations, but perhaps more importantly, meditative experiences that opened our minds to our deepest truth and essence.

I’m pleased to be offering monthly mini-retreats in Stittsville and would like to invite you to join. Undoubtedly you will get a new perspective on yourself and on life with the help of this ancient text. Fully relevant to our modern times, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali offer a practical and deeply mystical guidance. It is a timeless treasure.

Content: The monthly mini-retreats will be comprised of 30 minutes of meditation, group discussion on selected sutras and then smaller group discussion to discuss, explore, share, feel and integrate the wisdom of sutras into our lives. We end the mini-retreat by sharing insight as a group.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is widely regarded as the authoritative text on yoga. It is a collection of aphorisms, outlining the eight limbs of yoga, exploring practice, detachment, meditation and freedom.

Sutra is a Sanskrit word that means thread. These threads of wisdom offer guideline for living a meaningful and purposeful life.

Learn more about the sutras and Patanjali, the sage who wrote them, and the essential elements of yogic philosophy (effort, contemplation, meditation and nonattachment). The sutras serve as a spiritual and practical roadmap for navigating almost every aspect of life with greater equanimity and clarity.

Cost: $20 per session: $120 + taxes = $135.60 (payment by cheque, cash, e-transfer)

Times: One Saturday a month from 2 to 4:30 pm in Stittsville (Ottawa).

Recording: The guided meditations, based on meditation techniques of the sutras, will be recorded and emailed to you the next day.
