The Urban Vegetarian III: A Healthy Food Co-Operative in Ottawa West/ Nepean

August 17, 2018 | By More

Five years ago and again two years ago I published a similar article throughout Ottawa.  Since then several of us have approached some of the downtown vegetarian restaurants to see if they would be interested in opening a second vegetarian restaurant out in the west end of Ottawa.  So far a vegetarian restaurant in the west end has not materialized.  The model that I and many others are hoping for is similar to The Green Door on Main St. or The Table on Wellington St. (at Holland Ave.). They both sell food by the weight and are buffet-style.  The variety of healthy and tasty foods and desserts and baked goods and drinks that they offer is truly outstanding!!

When I visited Findhorn Community in Scotland, I learned a very powerful technique of visualization called manifestation technology.  Simply stated, if a person focuses on a particular idea for long enough and intensely enough, it eventually comes into being in the physical world.  For the last 3 or 4 years many of us have been hoping for and visualizing a co-operative and vegetarian restaurant in the west end of Ottawa-Carleton. There are NO co-operative/vegetarian buffet-style restaurants in the west end of Ottawa and Nepean.

Most cities grow to the west and Ottawa is no exception.  The urban population to the west of downtown Ottawa has grown considerably in the past ten years.  The average age of the Ottawa West / Nepean population has been going down.  The number of steak houses and fast food meat restaurants has also decreased significantly. The younger generation is eating much healthier foods and demanding more organic food products.  Unfortunately, when an  Ottawa West/ Nepean resident wants a healthy vegetarian meal they have to go downtown.

The time is ripe for a co-operative “urban vegetarian eatery” in the Ottawa West / Nepean area of the city, probably in the Algonquin College area near Woodroffe Ave. and Baseline Rd., just off the Queensway. It is worth noting that many of the original and most successful vegetarian restaurants are located near large university student populations. This ensures a steady clientele while the rest of the population is in the process of discovering the new vegetarian eatery location.

We have just celebrated the 45th anniversary of just such a co-operative in Toronto, Karma Co-op.  www.KarmaCoop.org

At Karma the theme is “Sustainable Food/Sustaining Community”

Also in response to political manipulation of the media in the United States and the “first-past-the-post” electoral system in Canada, a world-wide RDI, Renew Democracy Initiative, has begun to flourish.  www.Renew-Democracy.org  These can all be linked here in our own region by a group of highly motivated folks who fully believe in social democracy.  Here in Ottawa!

Our first gathering on this topic will be at 11 Basin Court in Nepean, on September 17, at 7:00 p.m.  We will discuss initiating, organizing, locating and funding such a sustainable project in the Ottawa West/ Nepean. Come on out!  Please contact us if you have any suggestions or ideas that will lead to the realization of this much needed and long overdue co-operative culinary manifestation in the west of Ottawa.
