Roughing It:  A Tale of Winter Skin

January 19, 2018 | By More

Every year our skin suffers the same fate: drying heat indoors, windy days outdoors leaving it dry, flaking and itchy. Conditions like excema flare up, children have chapped hands and lips-what’s a body to do?

Certainly hydrating from the inside-out is necessary. It doesn’t have to be cold water: a hot beverage with lemon can be effective, as can clear teas.
Dry brushing can also be useful-or salt/sugar scrubs before showering or in the tub. Just be extra careful around any damaged skin areas.

Take a look in your kitchen: up your omega supplements, apply your evening primrose topically to dry patches….if you are using high quality oils to cook with, give them a try: flax, sunflower and olive oils can be very soothing to the skin.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention essential oils. These concentrated bottles of goodness are wonderful when added to carrier oils so that they are diluted.

Here are some recipes to get you started!

Salt scrub

Celtic Sea Salt 1 cup

1/4 cup carrier oil (coconut, olive or other)

2 drops each lavender chamomile and geranium essential oil.

Blend essential oils with carrier oil, then combine with salts.

Use this scrub before showering or in the bath.

Discontinue use if redness or irritation occur (just because something is natural doesn’t mean you might not have a reaction)

After Bath Oil

100mL carrier oil (again, this can be something you are currently using in your kitchen)

Up to 20 drops total of essential oil suggestions: frankincense, lavender and carrot seed, rose, myrrh and palmarosa, cedarwood, patchouli and mandarin
