Essentials for Yoga

June 28, 2019 | By More

I have people come in quite often after a yoga class, asking what scent might have been  used during the practice. There are many essential oils that can ameliorate your experience during this deeply meditative self-care technique.

One which I have heard many studios use is eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus). Eucalyptus hails from Australia and is used extensively in spa/sauna treatments to help calm and feel the effects of deep breathing.

One of my personal favourites would have to be frankincense (we carry two species: Boswellia carteri and Boswellia serrata). This oil has been used in meditation for centuries in other parts of the world, and is a true gift to aromatherapy.

Lavender (Lavendula officinalis) is an uplifting yet calming essential oil. This is probably one of the most useful and economical oils you will find, and is far and away our best seller. It’s like first aid in a bottle!

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Flexuosus) is a great oil to add to your practice because it is a stress-reliever and imparts a sense of overall well being. It may also help with sleep, as well as many of the oils already described.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention rose essential oil (Rosa damascena) and sandalwood (santal album) in this article. They are precious oils, reflected in their cost, but rose is the premier oil for the heart and so can help promote a sense of self-worth. Sandalwood is another ancient oil which has been used extensively for relaxation and spiritual practice.

Two favourites of mine to promote a euphoric feeling are jasmine (Jasminum sambac) and neroli (Citrus aurantium), also known as orange blossom. These two have a delicate yet intense floral scent. Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) is another oil known for its uplifting aroma. It is also said to be an aphrodisiac. I’ll just leave that there.

If you are looking for an energizing essential oil to invigorate your practice, look no further than peppermint )Mentha piperita). Its sharp, clear scent is sure to  get you going. Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a sweeter, gentler version of peppermint. Either could be blended with lavender or a citrus such as red grapefruit or Persian lime to create a blend for early mornings.

Although I cannot describe the essential oils and all their virtues here, I invite you to come in and experience them first-hand at Planet Botanix. We have over 100 essential oils in stock. We also provide meditation and yoga twice a week to help you on your journey.
